I cannot find any pics of the first remake I did to this little bureau, but this is the third time I have painted this piece. I bought this bureau at a yardsale a good 20 years ago. This time, it is being used in my Living Room, as a stand for my TV. I added casters to give it a bit more height and mobility.
Here you can see what it looks like from a distance. I was going for more of a map drawer look, so did a little trompe l’oeil with the drawer fronts and added new knobs.
There are really just 3 drawers to this bureau, with each drawer having one row of the horizontal detailing. I added the additional horizontal lines with paint and a dark brown wax.
I needed 24 knobs, so the most economical way to go for me was to buy unfinished knobs, and paint them.
Prior to this makeover, I had stenciled this bureau. The very first time I painted this piece, I remember the wood was left natural (oak), and I just painted the top and knobs. One of my brother’s used it for a bit, as well as my daughter, before it was returned to me.
Two years ago, I thought I was done with this piece and put it in my yardsale for $25. It didn’t sell. When I had to haul it back into my house, I was disappointed, but now I am quite happy it never sold!
