I am back at the house where I did those 2 ceilings, just before the Holidays. Remember this shot of a lone column on the wall?
Today I began the prep work to make it disappear. When I removed the gate, 2 very large holes were left, which required a lot of plastering. I primed the column and brushed on the base coat, avoiding the drying repair section. I will return tomorrow to see how the plaster has dried. I know it will need another layer or two before I can paint, but all looks very hopeful for a smooth blend. I am working up 2 ceiling designs. One for the Office and one for the Sun Room.
I am still having my issues with getting the text to flow as it should with this new layout. When/if you see it looking really terrible, that means I’ve given up for the day, but will try again! 😉

Will you have to replace the gate, or has it outlived its purpose?
Are there cracks in the plaster to the left of the column, notably at the thermostat? Will you need to repair those, or is that room “out of scope” presently?
To some extent you are at the mercy of browser font and style sheet handling in getting the text flow you want. Browsers may substitute fonts, and may handle the layout, uh, “creatively” – what you see in Firefox on a Mac may differ from Internet Explorer on Windows. So don’t lose too much sleep over it 🙂
The gate is history. The homeowners decided not to put another rug in this Family Room since the dog ruins all rugs. Now the dog is allowed in here, so no need for the gate. The “cracks” are painted on… part of the original wall finish I did a few yrs. ago. I’ll extend some of the “cracks” when I blend in the painted out area where the column is now. You are too kind about my computer skills, or lack thereof. 😉
