Yay… another really nice new client who found me doing a search on the net. This was another reason why I thought I should pay more attention to this blog site. Should someone be doing a search for allover repeat patterns, hopefully I will show up!
This homeowner told me she had already purchased this stencil via Etsy. At first she wanted it on all walls, above the chair rail in the dining room, but that proved to be more costly than her budget could afford. I felt it would be a good idea to bring this large scaled pattern into the opposite side of the room, so suggested she buy two off-white, plain cotton panels for the window and I would do the stencil in reverse on those. This kept the price within a reasonable budget for her and solved her window treatment problem. The panels were a steal at a local IKEA, $20, for both! I used a rich gold color on the panels, adding a textile medium to the paint, so they will be washable. I was working nearby, so picked up the panels and did them at home on my dining room table, so I could just make one trip to her house to return them and do the accent wall. I carefully washed the stencil in my bathtub. While the pattern was beautiful, the stencil itself, was flimsy, not the high quality found with Royal Design Studio and Cutting Edge Stencils.
I really needed a 2nd stencil to do this job, but now it was too late. For this wall, I used my new favorite large stencil brush from Royal Design Studios and went to town with an off-white paint. The brush is great from holding a lot of paint and covering a lot of territory without having to reload. I still use a dry brush method, but I am able to go a long way before I have to reload and off-load the brush. By the time I finished, the stencil was very beat. It never could have been used for another job, so I ended up cutting it to fill some of the last remaining, hard to reach areas.
I realized when I went to post the pics from this job, unfortunately, most of the pictures were on my old phone,which was stolen shortly after this job. I suppose those pics are in "the cloud" somewhere, but I don’t have the patience or time right now to try to figure out how to retrieve them. I never had a photo of the room put together with the drapes hung, because I was only here for one day and the rod for the drapes had not been installed yet. The pattern does wrap around onto the short sides of this wall, but does not continue onto the other other walls.
For a small amount of money, a really big impact was made in this room by just stenciling the one jut out of wall and the drapes. I was happy I could figure out something that would be within their budget. This was a very old Victorian house with lots of great detail and very crooked walls! I hope I get to do more work here some day.
